Communications Specialist

Location: Silver Spring, MD

POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS seeks a Communications Specialist to join the Communications team and to work closely with colleagues across the organization to produce content that publicizes and promotes HIAS. This person will eagerly find stories about HIAS’ clients, branch offices, partners, operations, volunteers and others to highlight our impact serving and advocating for refugees of all faiths and ethnicities across the globe. They will support the promotion of HIAS as a global brand reaching U.S. and global audiences, and they will be responsible for writing, editing and producing editorial content, including multimedia and marketing campaign development, public relations and press outreach.

Note, this position can be based in our Silver Spring, Maryland headquarters or in our New York City office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Writes, edits and maintains editorial and marketing content related to HIAS news, achievements, field work and special events.
  • Communicates regularly with key personnel across headquarters, country offices and affiliates to unearth compelling stories that illuminate and publicize HIAS’ work and impact.
  • Produces blog posts, emails, newsletters, press releases, statements and other materials with input from Public Affairs and Programs staff.
  • Helps maintain the HIAS.org website.
  • Produces multimedia content, including photo slideshows, videos and graphics. 
  • Manages communications projects to support HIAS’ programming work, fundraising, marketing and advocacy campaigns and the needs of HIAS’ International Programs team.
  • Supports the communications strategy of HIAS in the United States, Europe and the countries in which HIAS operates, to effectively communicate to their respective target audiences.
  • Works with internal stakeholders and outside vendors to develop marketing and promotional collateral, including reports, brochures, flyers, graphics, advertising and other materials.
  • Assists with management of HIAS’ social media presence.
  • Analyzes data and reports on website traffic trends, marketing and advertising efforts.
  • Monitors media mentions.
  • Promotes and maintains HIAS’ messaging and brand collateral internally and externally.
  • Participates in ongoing development of HIAS’ communications strategy and training of staff in communications best practices.
  • Contributes to HIAS’ internal communications. 
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field. 
  • 4-6 years of experience in journalism, communications and/or public relations.
  • Excellent writing, copy-editing and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Experience creating engaging blog content and email communications; experience managing social media.
  • Resourceful and able to summarize complex issues for general audiences.
  • Experience producing multimedia content, including photo slideshows, videos and graphics; must be comfortable using photo and video editing and graphics software.
  • Subject matter expertise in refugee and/or asylum issues preferred.
  • Experience working or volunteering with a humanitarian and/or Jewish organization preferred. 
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in international marketing and communications strategies preferred.
  • Knowledge of AP Style; experience with Google Analytics and other analytical tools preferred.
  • Experience with online marketing and advertising preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and project management skills; ability to oversee outside vendor issues when necessary.
  • Ability to multi-task and problem-solve diverse issues.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and an ability to communicate effectively across different cultures.
