Intake Associate, Dari & Pashto

Location: Silver Spring, MD

POSITION SUMMARY: 

HIAS seeks an Intake Associate, Dari & Pashto to support HIAS’ legal team and Asylee Outreach Project (AOP) in Silver Spring, Maryland by coordinating and conducting intakes of prospective Afghan legal clients referred by local resettlement agencies. This position will form part of a new initiative within the AOP aimed at meeting the legal needs of eligible Afghan parolees residing in Maryland. This initiative will be leading all statewide coordination of legal services for Afghan parolees still needing to apply for asylum or other immigration benefits. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Coordinates and conducts legal screening intakes of prospective Afghan legal clients in Dari and/or Pashto to identify clients’ legal needs and confirm clients’ eligibility for services. 

  • Collaborates with the Asylee Outreach Specialist, the Legal Services team and the Pro Bono & Partnerships team to support determination of the best form of legal assistance for each respective case. 

  • Provides follow-up to clients regarding their case’s referral to the designated legal assistance program and next steps. 

  • Maintains the flow of intake processes and implements improvement strategies for these as needed. 

  • Plans and implements intake-related activities and systems, such as creating and updating relevant client case files and notes. 

  • Contributes to AOP grant data reporting regarding Afghan parolees served through legal screening intakes and the tracking of clients’ enrollment in specific legal programs. 

  • Brings commitment and integrity to accomplishing HIAS’ mission and goals in this and other duties as assigned, and commits to personal and professional implementation of HIAS’ core values. 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Undergraduate degree preferred, but not required; comprehensive understanding of the U.S. immigration legal system in lieu of a degree will also be considered. 

  • 1-2 years of relevant experience. 

  • Ability to read, write and speak Dari or Pashto is required; Farsi speakers will also be considered. 

  • Cultural sensitivity to and understanding of Afghan communities. 

  • Personality that enjoys interacting with many clients each day. 

  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. 

  • Attention to detail and organized, thoughtful and efficient work ethic and problem-solving skills.
