Senior Educator

HIAS seeks a Senior Educator to create educational content that will inspire and motivate the global Jewish community to take action for refugees, asylum seekers and the forcibly displaced. Through educational curricula and public programs, the Senior Educator plays a key role in galvanizing HIAS’ constituents to act from a place of deep grounding in Jewish history, experience, texts and values. The Senior Educator creatively “translates” age-old traditions into relevant, engaging, inspiring and meaningful portals into contemporary issues across various constituencies (lay activists, clergy, synagogues, partner organizations, donors, etc.). The Senior Educator initiates and oversees initiatives and programs that enable HIAS to educate and grow our base, reaching thousands of Jewish people in the U.S. and abroad.

The salary range is $95,000-105,000 and can be based in Silver Spring, Maryland, New York, New York or remote in the United States.


  • Researches, develops and delivers original, compelling Jewish educational content and materials (e.g. holiday resources, curricula, training resources) on refugee issues for use in a variety of settings, including synagogues, conferences and HIAS’ own educational streams.  

  • Creates and leads pedagogically sophisticated public programs and initiatives that both educate target audiences and catalyze action locally, nationally and internationally with and through HIAS.  

  • Serves as the content lead and project manager for Refugee Shabbat, HIAS’ annual signature program during which congregations, organizations and individuals in the U.S. and globally dedicate a Shabbat experience to refugees and asylum seekers.   

  • Serves as a dynamic educator in a variety of contexts—including with constituencies of partner organizations—at workshops, conferences and HIAS programs. 

  • In partnership with the entire Community Engagement team, co-creates educational program streams, resources, rituals and experiences for HIAS’ local and national constituencies. 

  • In partnership with the Senior Director, Community Engagement Initiatives, supports collaborations with aligned partner organizations in the Jewish community on refugee, asylum and immigration issues. 

  • In partnership with the Grassroots Campaigns team, infuses HIAS’ grassroots advocacy efforts with Jewish content and resources, ranging from educational tools and materials for broad national campaigns to resources and leadership development opportunities for the HIAS Welcome Campaign synagogue action network and the HIAS Grassroots Leaders Network.  

  • Develops tools and metrics to evaluate the impact of educational resources and programs and to rework resources according to evaluation findings. 

  • Coordinates the development of materials and programs across departments and divisions, and manages consultants, lay leaders and support staff, in order to bring projects to fruition. 


  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in education strongly preferred, rabbinical candidates welcome. 

  • 6-8 years of relevant experience as a Jewish educator, particularly at the intersection of informal education and social justice; strong background in human rights and/or refugee issues a plus. 

  • Experience working across generations, especially with baby boomers and those in their 20s and 30s.  

  • Creative, compelling and dynamic educator with experience teaching about Jewish values, Jewish text and/or history, and social justice. 

  • Proven expertise in developing cutting edge social justice-focused educational materials, grounded in best practices of informal education, for a range of constituents, activists and donors. 

  • Proven experience and knowledge in developing and applying pedagogy for adult learners and ability to translate this knowledge into program design. 

  • Ability to conceptualize an entire educational program as well as develop and deliver its components. 

  • Deep familiarity with Jewish text; ability to read, understand and translate Jewish texts in their original language preferred. 

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; ability to apply said skills with constituents across a spectrum of perspectives, beliefs, cultural backgrounds and opinions.  

  • Ability to quickly learn new content areas and integrate into educational programs. 

  • Detail oriented and extremely well-organized with ability to manage multiple projects. 

  • Flexible work style and interest in being part of a dynamic, evolving team and organization. 

  • Passionate about HIAS’ mission and committed to promoting the vision that social justice is an integral part of American Jewish life. 

  • Knowledge of the American Jewish community a must. 

  • Knowledge of Jewish communities in Latin America and Europe a plus. 

  • Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends. 

  • Some travel required, approximately 25-30 days/year.
