Legal Intern

Department: U.S. Legal Services
Location: Silver Spring, MD


HIAS seeks a Legal Intern to assist HIAS’ direct legal services programs, which benefit forcibly displaced immigrants seeking asylum and other relief in the United States. The intern will conduct research, writing and draft filings for submission to the Immigration Court, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services and state courts. Through this internship, the intern will learn about U.S. immigration law and the practice of law in a nonprofit setting. They will report directly to the Managing Attorney, and they will work with the Staff Attorneys and the Associate Director, Pro Bono & Partnerships.  

Note, this position is unpaid, but may be pursued for academic credit or a public interest stipend. We ask that applicants be available for 15-20 hours/week for a 4-month period beginning in January 2022. In order to be considered, please submit your resume, cover letter and a brief writing sample (10 pages or less, double-spaced) along with your application.  


  • Conducts thorough legal and factual research on topics assigned by Staff Attorneys. 

  • Writes memorandums, briefs and other documents in support of HIAS’ immigration legal cases. 

  • Researches and develops materials to train Pro Bono Attorneys on substantive legal issues in immigration and asylum law. 

  • Develops declarations and application forms through interviews with clients. 

  • Assists the legal team in preparation and presentation of asylum claims (affirmative and defensive), special immigrant juvenile cases, U-Visa, T-Visa and other cases. 

  • Reviews, prepares and finalizes applications for client benefits submitted by Pro Bono Attorneys, including I-485 Applications for Adjustment of Status. 

  • Maintains records and contributes to program reports in compliance with any applicable grants or other agreements. 

  • Assists Pro Bono Attorney teams with client interview and client preparation of asylum claims. 


  • Current law student (rising 2L or 3L). 

  • Strong interest in asylum law and/or processing, human rights and international law. 

  • Fluency in Spanish required; fluency in French or Russian a plus. 

  • Must be resourceful, thorough and analytical in order to develop information and obtain materials relevant to the research requested. 

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. 

  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills required.
