Safety & Security Coordinator

Department: Safety and Security
Location: Silver Spring, MD


HIAS seeks a Safety & Security Coordinator to strengthen safety and security management support to emergency response programming and other departmental activities, including security analysis. The preferred candidate is passionate about HIAS’ mission and has a demonstrated interest in international development and professional/academic experience in international relations, international security, humanitarian contexts or similar. They work as part of a small team delivering best practices in safety and security risk management for HIAS staff, assets and programming in the United States and internationally.


  • Supports Safety & Security and Emergency departments to effectively respond to emerging humanitarian challenges.
  • Assists the Safety & Security department with journey management for emergency response deployees and other personnel.
  • Helps conduct threat and risk analyses in support of emergency response activities.
  • Works across departments to embed security best practices in emergency response activities.
  • Closely monitors and analyzes regional security and political trends, including their potential impact on HIAS offices or operations.
  • Works with the Safety & Security team to complete back-office functions to enable provision of safety and security management services.
  • Conducts research on security issues and succinctly briefs leadership on security matters that may impact HIAS objectives.
  • In collaboration with the Safety & Security team, develops and maintains HIAS’ safety and security information management system.
  • Supports Safety & Security department staff to organize security related trainings.


  • Undergraduate degree in Development Studies, Humanitarian Studies, International Affairs/Politics, Security, Terrorism or other relevant field; similar degree at graduate level preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience working in the humanitarian space, preferably overseas.
  • Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish and/or French strongly preferred.
  • Excellent communication and written and oral briefing skills.
  • Experience in humanitarian field operations and emergency response a plus.
  • Background in safety and security management; experience of risk assessment, incident reporting, incident mapping, information collation and analysis and security technology preferred.
  • Overseas work experience in insecure and/or hostile environments a plus.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% to country offices, often to complex and insecure working environments, required.
  • Experience with data management tools, including data visualization software highly desired.
  • Excellent writing, research, and organizational ability.
  • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
